Hair Extensions Frequently Asked Questions

The Product

Where does the hair come from?
The best quality 100% human hair comes from India, Europe or Asia. You can read more about this below.

Can you match my hair color and texture?
Yes. The hair comes in almost every color and a few textures. Colors are typically blended for the most beautiful effect.

Your Hair

Are hair extensions suitable for me?
Hair extensions are perfect for most people. However, there could be factors, such as unsuitable current hair condition, hair loss, or hair damage that could prevent extensions from being an option. You will also need to assess your willingness to maintain the extensions. While they are real hair, extensions do require more care than your natural hair.

Do I need a consultation?
Yes, a consultation is required to decide if this service is right for you and to answer your questions. During the consultation, your stylist will analyze your hair to determine the color, type, and quantity of extensions you will require to achieve your desired look.

Can extensions be applied the same day as my consultation?
We're the first salon in Orlando to stock hair extensions! We've partnered with Luxury brand Frame & Thread to make it faster and easier to get your extensions installed. For other brands, hair extensions are custom ordered for the length you desire and the method of application that will be best for you. It is not possible to stock the infinite number of options that are available. Once you find your match, your stylist will order your extensions and accept payment for the hair (but not the labor). Typically, your installation appointment is scheduled a couple of days after your consultation to allow time for the hair to arrive.

How long does my hair need to be? How long CAN it be with extensions?
Your hair should be at least 3-4 inches for thickening or volume and at least 4-5 inches for a full lengthening. Extensions are typically available in 14", 16", 18", 22", and 24" lengths. Actual length depends on how you wear your hair (wavy or straight). Wavy hair is shown below with attachment at the middle of the head. If worn straight, you will usually see the length increase by about 2 inches.

The Results

How long does it last? With proper care, hand-tied extensions will last up to 8-12 months. Other types can last up to 6 months. There are variables with each person that will be discussed during the consultation. Your commitment to the after-care program provided by your stylist will also greatly impact the life of your extensions.

Will extensions damage my hair? No! With regular maintenance, you can wear extensions for years without adverse effects. As long as they are put in well and you do your part to care for them (washing appropriately, getting them adjusted every couple of months) your extensions will be as good to you as you are to them. Extensions won't cause breakage. All of the "lost hair" when you take them out is due to daily shedding. Everyone loses between 100-200 hairs a day, and when they're attached to extensions, those hairs are not falling out.

Does it hurt? Normally, extensions will not hurt. There will be some discomfort during application and it may take several days to become accustomed to the weight of the hair. Some clients report mild headaches for the first few days. Rarely, some clients will be more sensitive and may experience headaches for a couple of weeks.

The Service

How are they applied? Hair extensions can be applied to your hair in many different ways including: hand tied (Invisible Bead, Habit method, Natural Beaded Row method) taping, fusion, and beading. Different methods have different advantages. The method you choose will depend on many factors: your hair, your lifestyle, your budget, and your needs, for starters. The newest method, hand-tied, offers a virtually undetectable installation and, by eliminating tape, glue, plastic, and other unnatural elements, you are left with a strong, organic product that does not break down quickly.

Other common methods are tape-in, fusion & micro-bead. We've seen many other salons and stylists promoting just one method as being superior. You will often find that those salons have simply not made the investment in time, training, and equipment to be able to offer more than one type of extension application method. If you are undecided on which type of hair extensions are best for you, and you want an unbiased opinion, you should consult with a stylist in a salon where the stylists have training in all of the major application methods.

Hand-Tied Hair Extensions Orlando

Hand-Tied

Hand-Tied - The latest and most popular choice for hair extensions. Scroll through your Instagram feed and you'll see your favorite influencer's beautiful long natural-looking hair. Their secret is hand-tied weft extensions. The wefts are extremely light which makes it easier for your stylist to layer the wefts and give you long length with thickness that is hard to achieve with any other type of hair extensions. With proper installation, hand-tied wefts are virtually undetectable in the hair. Hand-tied wefts last longer than other types of hair extensions. By eliminating tape, glue, plastic, and other unnatural elements, you are left with a strong, organic product that does not break down quickly. With proper care, a client can expect to get 8-12 months of wear before they need to replace their wefts. We currently stock Frame & Thread hand-tied wefts and our stylists offer other popular brands like Covet & Mane as well.

Tape-In Hair Extensions Orlando

Tape-In

Tape-In - Still a popular choice for hair extensions, tape-in extensions have some very loyal followers. Tape-in extensions use an adhesive weft that is applied without the need for tools or heat. Tape-in extensions are uniquely designed to lay completely seamless and in the hair. The best quality tape-in extensions like Hotheads, Bellami, and Extensionology are manufactured with top quality human remy hair with the cuticle intact. This allows the hair to be reapplied up to 3 times. These extensions can last 8 to 10 weeks per application. Tape-in extensions are suitable for all hair types and they are particularly good for someone who's starting with very short hair.

Micro-Bead Extensions Salon Orlando

Micro-Bead

Micro-Bead - This method involves attaching the extension to the hair using a tiny, color-matched metal bead. There are several advantages to this method; the extension hair can be reused after removal, the extension can be applied and removed without the use of a adhesive bond and they are relatively easy to install. The main reason that some clients and stylists prefer micro-bead hair extensions is that they can be adjusted (moved closer to the scalp) as the natural hair grows. And, unlike with fusion, they may be reattached if the strand comes out. With adjustments and proper care, micro-bead extensions can last up to six months.

Fusion Extensions Orlando

Fusion

Fusion - Fusion hair extensions use an adhesive bond.

Heat is used to activate a bond to attach extensions to your hair. The best quality fusion hair extensions are applied using a keratin bond. Since your hair is made up of 90% keratin, this bond is more gentle on your hair than the adhesive used by most other brands. These extensions can last four months or more. They can not be adjusted (moved closer to your scalp) as your hair grows.

How should I prepare for my appointment?
You should arrive with very clean, dry hair with absolutely NO product including oils, stylers, conditioners, etc. This is essential to make sure the extensions will last as long as possible.

How long does the process take?
The time varies depending on the desired look. It usually takes anywhere from 2 to 4 hours (hand-tied or tape-in) and 2-8 hours (micro-bead or fusion).

How much does it cost?
Cost depends on many factors including, length, color, brand, type, quantity, and the condition of your hair. Extensions typically range from $450 to $1200. There are many factors that can impact the overall cost. This will be discussed fully during your consultation. As your hair will be custom-ordered for you, most stylists will charge for the hair when it is ordered.

Aftercare

Can I treat my hair the same as before?
Not exactly.

  • The correct brushes, cleansing, conditioning, and styling products will be recommended. It is very important to follow the recommendations made by your stylist.
  • Brushing 3-4 times per day will prevent tangling.
  • Conditioners, oils, and products containing silicone must be kept away from the root (apply mid-shaft).
  • A heat protectant, like Kerastase Nectar Thermique, must be used before flat ironing or blow drying your hair.
  • Avoid sleeping with wet hair.
  • Do not have your hair colored by anyone other than the stylist who applied your extensions.
  • Treat yourself to a silk pillow to prevent snags during sleep.

Some additional care may be required to get the most out of your extensions. This will be explained during your initial consultation. Improper care may result in the loss of some of your extensions and will require you to make more frequent visits to the salon for maintenance. With improper care, the costs associated with in-salon maintenance of your extensions will increase as the stylist will have to allow more time for your visit.

Can I swim in a pool and go to the beach?

Yes. Just as your own hair can, however, be affected by chlorine and salt water, it is best to use extra precautions to prevent tangling, dryness, and damage. Frequent swimming and salt-water or chlorine exposure will dehydrate the wefts and will significantly reduce their life expectancy. Use a protective product with added UV protection to prevent damage from salt, chlorine, and other chemicals that may damage your extensions. That it is essential to use the proper hair care products and methods to keep your hair clean and healthy can not be stressed enough. Your stylist will discuss this during your consultation.

How about physical activities like tennis, running, or regular workouts?
As with swimming, you will want to take extra precaution. If you will be outside, it is essential to use the proper UV protective products. You would be advised that you should brush, wash, and condition your hair as quickly as possible after intense physical activity.

Can I have my hair colored with extensions?
Yes, a professional colorist will have no problem maintaining your hair color. If you decide you want a color change, you will most likely have to replace your extensions as it will be almost impossible to get them to match the new color of your natural hair.

Is it normal for some of my extensions to come out on their own?

It is possible that, over time, your extensions can slide or loosen. With the right aftercare and regular maintenance, your extensions will last longer. If you wear hand-tied, micro-bead or tape-in extensions, you may keep this hair to be re-attached during your next appointment. Fusion extensions can often not be reused and should be discarded.

What type of follow-up appointments are required?
This varies based on the type of extension you select and is also determined by how well you take care of your extensions:

Hand-Tied - It is recommended that, on the day of your installation, you book an adjustment appointment within 7 weeks. During that adjustment visit, your stylist can discuss extending time between adjustments by a week or two as long as you are following the proper aftercare instructions. You should not wait to schedule these visits as our hand-tied extensions stylists are typically booked far in advance.

Tape-In - To maintain the natural look of tape-in extensions, you will visit your stylist after 8 to 10 weeks. With proper home care, tape-in extensions can be adjusted 3 times for a total life of up to 40 weeks.

Micro-Bead - For a natural look, Micro-Bead extensions must be adjusted closer to your scalp as your natural hair grows. Based on your hair type, density, and growth, your stylist will recommend that you visit every 6 to 8 weeks while you have your extensions. These extensions can last up to 6 months (occasionally longer).

Fusion - Over the life of the extensions (up to 4 months), you should visit your stylist for a maintenance cut which will include trimming the tips of the extensions so they do not matte together.

Aftercare visits are not included in the price of your initial extensions application. Your stylist can provide a range of pricing for aftercare visits (typically an hourly rate) which will vary based on your hair type and how well you take care of your extensions.
